1229. Backward Roll

I have friends and relatives who are or were gymnasts, so I couldn't help but think of them with this onion's position on my still life table.  The onions in my rooftop garden had a second growth spurt of green chutes after a warm spell.  Some have both the green scapes and dried scapes attached, which I'm sure you will see in a future painting.

1226. Cryin' Shame

I'm still drawn to these onions, and want to paint as many as I can before I must bring them in for the winter.  I was surprised to see green scapes growing from the onions again.  I've never had that happen, but it does give me another painting opportunity.

1130. Up On the Roof

This is the view from my Chicago roof at that golden time of the day when the sun kisses the windows till they glow.  Drawing it was a challenge.   My roof is a place that brings me joy in all seasons except winter because I have a  large garden there.  I love to dig my hands in the dirt, and watch the plants grow from day to day and to produce vegetables and flowers I am proud of.

The Drifters sang it best, and this is really how I feel:

When this old world starts getting me down
And people are just too much for me to face
I climb way up to the top of the stairs
And all my cares just drift right into space

1066 The Birds and the Bees

September 8.  I was initially very infatuated with the color color in the photo below, but have since tired of it in such a large quantity.  I still continue to tone my backgrounds with it.  The photo above reflects the new background color.

I practically had to fight the birds and bees around the sunflowers on the roof to gain access to the flowers.

1064 Cuppa Sunshine

Today is Day 1 of the Strada September 30-Day Challenge.  I decided to make use of my many black and white container props to provide some consistency. ( I'm a sucker for black and white. ) The marigolds are vibrant and plentiful in my rooftop garden.

986 Family Portrait

Some days are better than others, and on the particular day I painted this, my husband and I needed some levity.  Yesterday's practice on First Pick of the Season was good prep for this one.  Hope it brings you a smile today.

984 The Optimist, the Pessimist and the Realist

I was given some fancy sunflower seeds in the Spring, and was so happy to watch them grow tall in their pot on my roof, so every time I climb the stairs, their unruly petals greet me with sunshine.  Each stem has 3 or 4 flowers in a clump, but this was the first bloom, so they aren't visible.  While painting this, I made many trips up to the roof to get the colors right.

I notice some of the seeds are missing, so I am assuming I have had visitors to my garden.
