937 Triple Play

This was a fun little painting to make but I've had great difficulty getting an accurate background color in the photo.  It's really a pale yellow.

Door County, Wisconsin is ALL about cherries.  Cherries are made into and decorate just about anything you can think of , and I am quite sure greatly contribute to the economy.

928 Pucker Up

A visit to Door County is not complete without a visit to see Renee Schwaller, potter and proprietress of Off the Wheel Pottery in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin  http://www.offthewheelpottery.com/
Renee is one of those people you are instantly drawn too, and she's a very talented artist.  I love all the pieces I've collected from her shop, including this new bowl, which features birds and the scraffitto style I love so much.  I set up this still life with natural light and enjoyed putting it together, which is often the most challenging part of a painting.  I hope you like it.

924 Drop Dead Gorgeous

It was fun to arrange this set up, and certainly to paint it, but NOT to photograph it.  Sometimes that is the hardest part.  I especially enjoyed fanning through the stack of paint chips to find the right one.  I find the names of the paint colors to be so interesting, and often so humorous.  In this case, there really is a paint color in the red family called "Drop Dead Gorgeous," Number 1329 by Benjamin Moore.

898 Crazy for Cherries

Cherries are a very big part of Door County's image and certainly its economy.  Door County is a peninsula and its unique climate and soil conditions make it perfect for cherries to grow.  The Door County website features a cherry report, tracking the progression of blossoms to the various stages of cherry growth. I borrowed the title of the painting from this website.

Here are a few health benefits of eating cherries, according to orchardcountry.com

Tart cherries offer these potential health benefits:
• Relieve the pain of arthritis, gout and headaches
• Up to 10 times more effective in fighting joint and
muscle inflammation than aspirin
• High in natural melatonin to improve sleep patterns
• Helps lower cholesterol
• Protect heart against disease, attacks or strokes
• Helps lower blood pressure
• Protect brain and neuromuscular systems
• Inhibit the growth of colon cancer tumors
• Helps fight and prevent certain chronic diseases
• Supports your immune system

895 Missing a Piece and 896 Margarita

895 Missing a Piece  (This painting has sold)

896 Margarita, acrylic on 6 x 8" museum hardbord

I enjoyed painting this still life so much that I painted it twice.  Limes last a long time, unlike flowers.  Both are headed to Edgewood Orchard Gallery in Door County this Spring.

891 Lemons in a Blue and White Bowl

The colors of blue and white and yellow are so cheery and never seem to go out of style.
This morning glory bowl was made by Milwaukee artist, Jean Smaglik Wells using a technique called sgraffito.  Her bowls are my favorites for still life paintings.

This is a snippet of the barn at the John Turner Land Trust in Door County.  I like the perspective and of course, the blue roof.

886 Drop Outs

Sometimes veggies and fruit get side tracked in a still life artist's house.  This was fun to paint.

882 Hidden Away

In all the visits we've made to Door County, I had never seen this little vignette.  When we were there last month, there was a "Stop the car!" moment, when I got out to photograph this little house amidst the trees.  I love when that happens!

879 Golden Globe

Door County has many beautiful farms that pepper the landscape, and sometimes I stop to photograph them in all their majesty.  This particular silo is located on a farm on our way in or out of "town" but I recently discovered that this "golden globe" is not one of a kind at all.  I still find it beautiful and enjoyed painting it.

860 Looking East: 6:37 p.m. at Fred & Fuzzy's

Door County has the most breathtaking views of sunsets over Green Bay.  There is a popular restaurant in Sister Bay Door County, Wisconsin called Fred & Fuzzy's where you can sit outside and
enjoy the beautiful sunsets along with good food and a beautiful atmosphere.

What I have discovered is that when the sun is setting in the west, sometimes the view is even more beautiful if you look to the EAST.  That is the view you are seeing here.  I thought it was spectacular!
I wasn't sure the actual intensity of the colors would be believable, so I modified them a little, so imagine the tree trunks even more vibrant than they are here!  Mother Nature has an amazing color palette!

857 Hob Nobbing in Door County

Door County will start to come alive this weekend after a long sleepy winter.  This painting is now being offered for sale at The Edgewood Orchard Galleries in Fish Creek, Door County, Wisconsin.  It took me quite awhile to complete due to its size and complexity, but I loved every minute of painting it.  Door knobs were so beautiful in years past, and, oh, if only they could talk.  What stories they would tell!

I hope if your travels take you to Door County, you will stop in at the gallery and say hello.  It's a beautiful place with magnificent sculpture gardens, and of course great art inside too!  Please mention you are a friend of mine and snap a photo of my paintings on the wall.  It's always so much fun for me to receive emails/texts from friends who are visiting the gallery.  You can see my work and all the others at www.edgewoodorchard.com

854 Sunset Trail, Peninsula State Park

The light shining through and on the trees on the Sunset Trail is captivating.  I find the undergrowth almost as interesting as the trees.  In the Spring, there are tiny purple irises that blanket the ground. The felled birches are so beautiful, too.  It's a beautiful place to hike or bike ride.

853 White Cedar Forest, Sunset Trail, Peninsula State Park

The Sunset Trail in the Peninsula State Park, Door County, Wisconsin is one of my sacred places.  I never miss a chance to walk the path and bask in the glorious light streaming through the trees.  I must have hundreds of photos of trees and light!

The path is 10 miles for the long version or 3 miles for the short one.  When our children were young, it was our tradition to ride bikes for the long trail. There is a spot where a sign urges "Parents, Watch Your Children"  at a steep incline, and our kids would always defiantly speed up and ride hands free. One recent visit, my husband and I took each other's pictures near the sign pretending to be frightened.  Those 10 miles seem much longer now that we are older, and certainly not as much fun without the "kids."

812 Peony

I took several photos of beautiful peonies at the Peninsula School of Art this Spring but never thought I'd be compelled to paint any of them so quickly.  I really enjoyed this exercise, and hope you like the product of many, many hours of work.

716 Drive By Photo Shoot

I am constantly reminded to squint when I am painting so as not to paint harsh lines and fussy details, in fact, I recall with a smile that in one class, our instructor asked us to smear Vaseline on our glasses to blur the image we would see.  It was a fun exercise.  This photo (reference) was very blurry because we were clipping along in Door County.  I just can't resist a photo op when I am in the passenger seat.
