1098 Dancing Cheek to Cheek

I had to get one more nasturtium painting in before the garden is put to bed for the winter.  I am collecting seeds from the nasturtiums with the hope of growing them again next year.  They are such a happy flower and bring me joy.

1087 Defying Odds

There is an unwritten "rule" that groupings of objects should always be in odd numbers, but I am defying that because there might be one flower hiding.  I'm sure you can see it behind those leaves.

Also, Daily Paintworks regularly posts challenges, and a recent challenge was for Even Number Challenge.  I submitted this painting.

Day 24 of the Strada Easel challenge.

1063 Flirtatious

It's really nice not having to purchase flowers for my still lifes.  I just go to my roof and pick them.

Tomorrow begins the Strada Easel 2021 30-day September challenge, during which artists from all around the world paint a painting every day and post them to social media and to Strada's site.  Although I have painted most every day for many years, this will be fun and challenging in a different way.   I hope you will follow my progress.

1062 Unassuming

I know I've been sounding a little obsessed with nasturtiums lately.  Forgive me.  I know I'm not the only gardener who appreciates these unassuming lovelies.  Although they have completely taken over the eggplant and pepper elevated bed, they are still do not demand attention as the zinnias, marigolds and sunflowers do.  Their humble flowers hide beneath the leaves and do not seem to revel in the spotlight.

1060 Summer Love

My rooftop garden vegetables are winding down, but the flowers are exploding in number and with color.  I'm fascinated with the every-which-way of the nasturtium leaves and flowers.  Putting together a still life arrangement is often the most difficult part of making a painting, but this was a no brainer.  The wine bottle is a favorite and was given to me by a dear friend.  I purchased the Van Briggle over 36 years ago, and it has been a treasured souvenir from Colorado.   I really love the way all these colors came together.

1059 Faithful Garden Companion

For the past several years, I've had a love affair with nasturtiums.  I have discovered that there are a lot of people who love them too.  This Spring I read up on companion planting for my garden, and discovered that nasturtiums are beneficial to many garden vegetables, so they kept company to my zucchini, cucumbers, green beans, eggplants/peppers,  and tomatoes.  As some of those crops are waning, the nasturtiums are still going strong.  Did you know nasturtiums and their leaves are edible?  I haven't tried them yet, but should.  Many thanks to my friend Roberta for sharing her seeds. with me.

994 Friend of a Friend of a Friend

I love nasturtiums, but was very disappointed that my attempts to grow them this year on my roof did not bring better results.  I'm not sure if the reason they did poorly is because it's too sunny, too much water, or the soil wasn't bad enough.  Oddly, such a sweet little flower likes poor soil.  I'm not giving up yet, and will try again next year.  One more thing, did you know that nasturtium flowers and leaves are edible?

979 Be Still My Heart

I fell in love with nasturtiums 3 years ago when my garden club was scoping out gardens for our Quilts In The Garden Walk, which by the way was a crazy wild success.  We found the cutest little backyard garden completely filled with nasturtiums, spilling over sidewalks and their little pond, and that's the moment I fell in love with their beautiful leaves and flowers.  We planned the entire winter for quilts to accompany this beautiful garden.  The following spring, we visited the garden and discovered the homeowner had ripped out all the nasturtiums.  I was devastated, BUT their replacement garden was equally as beautiful and we went to Plan B.  Lesson learned.

945 The Young and the Restless

I've had good luck growing nasturtiums on my rooftop. They are such a happy little flower, and I love the way they grow every which way.  This painting may look familiar to you, and it's because I have more or less painted it before, but it sold before it ever made it to the gallery wall.  It's one of my favorites.

935 Happy Every Which Way

I'm getting a lot of mileage out of my rooftop garden of nasturtiums, an edible flower and leaves.  They are such a happy flower.  The vase is a favorite from Off the Wheel Pottery in Door County, and was made using the sgraffito method.

I really enjoyed setting this scene up in my studio, although the nasturtiums are a little hard to manage.

I wonder if you are tired of seeing nasturtiums.

934 Rooftop Garden

I grew the nasturtiums on my rooftop garden.  They like the full sun and are rather shy, preferring not to be fussed over.  They are such a happy flower, and edible too, with a peppery taste.

I've been working mostly with oil paints this summer, trying desperately to master them.  Not sure I'm succeeding, but I love a good challenge.

933 Gifted by Maidens

In the last couple of years, I've gone crazy for Nasturtiums, an edible flower that is fairly easy to grow.  Last year, I watered them too much and they did not do well--it seems they prefer to be ignored.  The ones in this painting are from this year's rooftop garden, and they greet me with a big splash of beautiful colors---red, orange and yellow---each time I hoof it up the stairs to the roof.  The cup was a thank you gift from a neighbor friend, and is from Door County.  What I love about Nasturtiums is their wild and crazy growth, and the sweetness of their leaves in so many sizes from large to teeny-tiny.

I always like to learn a little something about my subject, so here is what I learned about Nasturtiums.
Copied from www.exoticflowers.com:

"As for the symbolism behind nasturtiums, the blossom is known for meaning “patriotism” and “conquest”.  We’re not sure why exactly but the flower has strong ties to combat and war, perhaps because of its shocking color of orange and red or maybe because the shape of the foliage resembles the appearance of a shield.  Whatever the reason, soldiers customarily wore nasturtiums as a sign of victory, which were gifted to them by maidens.  Large blankets of flower heads were also woven to make blankets and cloaks for those who successfully won a difficult battle.  Today, the nasturtium resonates towards a “happy” theme and has also become an emblem for the warm summer months of July and August. 868 Nasturtiums

My new floral infatuation is with nasturtiums, a beautiful and edible flower.  I have a few multi-colored plants--yellow, red and orange, in a pot on my patio and they are hardy and beautiful.  I love how the stems go every-which-way.  I am sure this is the first of many more nasturtium paintings.  Next year they will have a more prominent place in my garden.
