1278. Sale on Cuties

My husband recently bought a giant bag of Cuties and I had some "near the end" orange Gerber daisies which begged for a painting with one of my favorite color combinations.  I was happy to comply.

1276. Lady in Red

If this painting looks familiar, it's because I painted a smaller version (12 x 12") a couple of weeks ago and it sold right away.  I really loved the colors and wanted another go at sizing up, which is not as easy as one might think it would be.  I'm very happy with this one and hope it finds a home soon before I decide I want to keep it.

12664. Dreaming in Color

I absolutely loved painting this.  A happy accident was that I grounded the canvas with  the pinks and reds left over on my palette and when I finished painting the image, I decided to keep it, definitely a practice I will continue.  This painting is for sale, unframed, but shown here to give an idea of how it would look framed. Gratitude to LaTerre Market for use of their photo for inspiration.

1262. Warm and Cozy

It is a whopping10 degrees here in Chicago, which feels like -2 degrees with the wind chill.  Why I thought to paint geraniums is beyond me--wishful thinking perhaps.  I used only palette knives and my favorite silicone color shaper, no brushes.

1260. A Lasting Affection

Did you know that roses have meaning depending on their color?  Peach roses are symbolic of sweetness, sincerity, and genuineness, among many others.  They seem to be very popular now for weddings to symbolize innocence and a lasting friendship and affection.

Yellow roses symbolize friendship and remembrance.  Red roses convey passion and romance while white stands for purity and innocence.

What's your favorite ?

1247. Peach Cobbler (Study)

I really love the composition of this floral, which is a Farmgirl Floral arrangement, painted with permission.  I will be attempting to paint it  much larger, and I'm hopeful that it will work out.

1244. Pretty in Pink

This is another LaTerre Market flower arrangement.  I loved the elegance of the arrangement and the simplicity of the colors.  Grateful for permission to use the photo as a reference.

1240. Farmgirl

I received a beautiful floral arrangement recently from a friend.  It was from Farmgirl Flowers and full of beautiful pink and red flowers in a pretty pink vase with a ribbon.   It was a very cheery arrangement, and making this painting on a grey and dreary Chicago day really perked up my spirits.  I really don't like winter, and this was fun to paint.

In case you are wondering, Farmgirl flowers never disappoints!  They ship beautiful arrangements anywhere in the country, sometimes in vases, other times in burlap, and I've never been disappointed on the sending or receiving end. The arrangements are unusual and often exotic and plentiful.

1239. Serendipity

A good friend suggested that I make more paintings like 1237 Blissful, which has prompted me to explore (with a little confidence) a more abstracted version of florals, which is enjoyable but challenging.  I particularly like glazing at the very end, which is just simply adding a layer and then removing it, leaving bits of the color.  What do you think?

1237. Blissful

This painting is a combination of summer garden flowers and imagination.  It's a little different for me, looser and more free style, and fun to paint.

1228. Ornamental

There are many ornamental cabbages grown at The Chicago Botanical Gardens and I inspected them all!  I was fascinated by the way the light created the illuminated effect on some of the leaves and of course I loved the colors.  These cabbages are grown strictly for their decorative affect and have no other use but to be beautiful.

1133. Just What the Doctor Ordered

Winters here in the Midwest can be long and dreary.  Even though we flew to warmer weather for  a few weeks, returning home to cold, snow, ice and grey skies---in addition to all that is going on in the world--was depressing.  It's funny to think that a bunch of tulips can lift your spirits, giving you the promise of Spring and flowers growing in our own yards.   I can hardly wait.

Artists all over the world are painting sunflowers, which is Ukraine's national flower.  While I have not yet painted sunflowers for Ukraine, I will hope for now that my tulips will represent hope for peace and the end of this savage destruction.

1107 Gathering of Like-Minds

I love the way Cosmos are such delicate flowers and yet have a mind of their own, bending their stems every which way.  The reference photo for this painting was provided with permission by Holly Ann, a fellow member of the Chicago Gardeners Facebook Group.  I love painting white flowers, and paint them every chance I get, each incident being a steep learning experience.

I hope you like it.

1099 Aloha

I took the reference photo for this painting at the Chicago Botanical Gardens.  There are stairs surrounding the waterfall, and at the top there is a beautiful hibiscus bush.  It's always crowded on this narrow path, so I had one shot, and I think this turned out to be a perfect pose.  I always think of Hawaii when I think of hibiscus, where I've never been, unfortunately.

1090 Within Reach

What a day it has been!  My first painting is so bad that I had to paint another.  This isn't much better.  Some days are like that.  Time to move on.

1088 Oh Happy Day

It's a beautiful, happy day.  Nothing says "happy" like polka dots.  I love them.  In fact, later today we are attending a wedding and guess what I am wearing. A black and white polka dot dress!

I was curious to know more about polka dots.  This is part of what I learned, compliments of Wikipedia.

"Polka-dots: If you can't let go of polka-dots dress or shirt, your personality is probably just as lively and energetic as the playful print. Those who prefer polka dots have also been identified as hardworking and multi-taskers. ... You can use polka dots even in neutral colors, like black, white, and grey."

1082 Safflower in an Olive Oil Tin

This painting should really be called Sunday Morning Obsessing.  I've photographed, changed, photographed, changed umpteen times.
